Food trucks were always a quick and cheap way to eat food as a college student. Many years later, I’m happy to see the food truck revolution has landed in Southeast Michigan. These quick service moving establishments serve many creative options like pork belly tacos, watermelon basil ice pops and wood fired pizza. A mild, spring day in Detroit was the perfect opportunity to visit Campus Martius where four Michigan food trucks feed the downtown locals for lunch.

First, we stopped at Socra Tea Detroit—a tea house and artist gallery in the museum and medical center district of Detroit. An inviting environment for shopping and eating, we perused the ceramics, jewelry, paintings and artisan food items before even ordering our drinks and snacks. Socra Tea truly specializes in tea offering a full wall of traditional tea blends as well as some personal creations such as, peanut butter and jelly tea blend and strawberry dream tea blend. They offer baked goods from Ethel’s Edibles, Pinwheel Bakery and Sister Pie.

Making one last stop before lunch, we visited the newly opened store front of Bon Bon Bon in the Chrysler House Building. Bon Bon Bon is an artisan chocolate company producing bite-sized gourmet creations out of Hamtramck. Thirty flavors of chocolates are offered daily in the store. Check out the nontraditional flavors like bacon and eggs and banana pancakes as well as the Detroit inspired paczki and bumpy cake. Take home the hand-made confections in their exclusive honeycombed cardboard packaging that gets stamped, stickered and rubber banded.

Coveting my gourmet chocolates, we walked over to the bustling Campus Martius District. Four food trucks—Delectabowl, Concrete Cuisine, Mac Shack and Mean Weenie—were serving lunch to the hungry crowd. We made the difficult choice to eat some home-cooked comfort food from Delectabowl. I choose the Fiesta Bowl that had a base of brown rice and black bean stew top with fresh corn salad, pico de gallo and green goddess dressing. Choosing to use local products when possible, the sandwiches are prepared with Julian Brothers bread of Clawson.
