Just a few blocks from the new location of the Flint Farmers’ Market is Rolls “R” Ready—a bakery that has been serving the community for over 12 years. We were immediately welcomed by the owner, Ms. Evelyn Harrison, who was quick to spin a tale about growing up in Arkansas or about Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s visit to her bakery.

While listening to all of Evelyn’s wonderful stories, we snacked on some old Southern tea cakes and an apple turnover. Be sure to try her signature cinnamon rolls that are touted as the “best buns in town.”

After filling our bellies with baked treats, edibleWOW Magazine met at the Flint Farmers’ Market for our staff meeting. With numerous places to eat and shop for local foods, a community kitchen and even Zumba classes, this downtown location truly feels like the hub of Flint. It is the perfect place to begin revisiting the Flint community.

Lunch led us to the historic Carriage Town area of Flint and Hoffman’s Deco Deli and Café. Originally opened in 1928 as a Sears auto center, the building now houses the deli along with an antique center. The menu offers creative sandwiches, wraps and salads. All the bread is made in-house along with the delicious sides of apple cinnamon baked beans, almost healthy coleslaw or tomato basil couscous.

Hoffman’s deli supports the community by purchasing food from the Flint Farmers’ Market and farmers in Genesee County. They also create sandwiches that reflect the community such as, Buick City B.L.T and the Durant.

Flint is another community being revitalized by the passion of food and its committed residents.
